Lei Yue Mun Waterfront Sitting-out Area
Lei Yue Mun is the eastern entrance of Victoria Harbour, in the area of Kowloon’s Devil’s Peak and Tsau Wan and Hong Kong Island’s A Kung Ngam. Its name can be traced back to 1595, from “Grand record of Guangdong” written by the late Ming-period. In the 1960s, the government’s plan for the Yau Tong Industrial Zone levelled the hills around Sam Ka Tsuen, while reclaiming and developing Tsau Wan into the Sam Ka Tsuen Typhoon Shelter, seafood market and restaurants. The reclamation project gradually took shape into its current form until the 1990s, with a promenade sitting-out area built at the notch of the typhoon shelter. By 2000, the “Lei Yue Mun” archway of about 10 metres tall and 12 metres wide was erected. The sitting-out area embraces the typhoon shelter in an upside-down J shape, while the crimson lamp corridor and the Lagerstroemia speciosa tree line symmetrise around the archway, extending east-west along the coastline. Steps and flowerbeds act as transitions for the border between the sitting-out area, the street and the municipal services building. From the promenade, users can enjoy a view wide and open, a pleasant seaside walk during dawns and evenings.
