Yung Shue Wan Sitting-out Area
Yung Shue Wan, the most densely populated area of Lamma Island, look and feel like a European town. Large numbers of expatriate workers arrived in the area in the 1970s and 1980s as a result of the construction of the Lamma Power Station. The Yung Shue Wan Sitting-out Area was built in 1986 as a playground and later converted into a sitting-out area. It is located on a terrace protruded from the coastline along the Yung Shue Wan Street and is lined with bars, seafood stalls and cafes—an immersive atmosphere of an island getaway. The sitting-out area is only 86 square metres in size with a compact layout. The site is equipped with three sets of shade shelters, and is enclosed by planting beds full of richly coloured Ixora chinensis Lam., Duranta erecta ‘Gold Edge’, and Tibouchina aspera var asperrima. To keep fishermen and residents at the pier and in the harbour informed, a large LCD time and thermometer was erected in 2010 in the flower bed at the seaward corner of the site. However, due to the site’s close proximity to obnoxious municipal facilities such as the Yung Shue Wan Refuse Collection Point and public toilets, the pungent odour makes the site less attractive to passers-by or residents.
