Lee On Road Sitting-out Area

Built in the late 1980s, the crescent-shaped Lee On Road Sitting-out Area rests against the protective slope of New Clear Water Bay Road north of the bend at the northern end of Lee On Road. Next to the west entrance of the sitting-out area is the Shun Lee Tak Fuk Pak Kung Temple, which was expanded to its current size in 2004. Yet its joss-paper burner, an important piece to Chinese spiritual worship, remains in the sitting-out area managed by temple abbots. In the sitting-out area, three band-shaped planting beds and paths are arranged parallel to the bend of Lee On Road in a natural and layered inward transition. Along the corridor on the second floor, four terraces with benches and gable-roofed arbours are protruding from the road, while the third floor has a 10-metres long cobblestone walkway gently tilting. Caryota mitis are planted in close packs as a screen between the site and the slope. The sitting-out area and Pak Kung Temple are not only the emotional bond among Sze Shun residents, but also a transformation from an urban marginal space into a socially cohesive and emotive place.
