Public Street Rest Garden
The Public Square Street was formed from the Yau Ma Tei reclamation project in the 1890s. At that time, the government was planning to transform vacant lands between Tin Hau Temple and the Yau Ma Tei Police Station into a public square. This public square was the first design concept by the government and was a key milestone for future public space planning and development. Before the 1980s, the Public Square Street’s Chinese name was a literal translation from its English counterpart, but it was contracted soon after. The rest garden is located at the junction of Nathan Road and Public Square Street, with the Yau Mai Tei Tin Hau Temple and the Yau Ma Tei Community Centre Rest Garden behind it. It is rectangular in shape and built on a slope and is styled with unique Chinese characteristics, including Chinese pavilions, pools, stone bridges, archways and chess stands.
